EDUCATE AND TRANSFORM is AU’s main methodology because it brings together education, transformation and hands-on activities focused on the resolution of the real challenges of the communities we work with.
The themes we work with during the project are specific to each context, focusing mainly on social and environmental issues. Our team starts the work getting to know a community, identifying their talents and challenges. After the initial diagnosis, we create a schedule organized in two parts:
1- “EDUCATE”, when the community gets in touch with the themes of the project through educational and practical workshops, prioritizing the local talents as protagonists of the activities;
2- “TRANSFORM”, when the participants are invited to get their hands dirty to transform their communities for real, by building a physical legacy for their territory.
By the end, we celebrate the power of transformation that a united community has!
Let’s educate to transform?

PATH FOR EDUCATION
Partnership: Feac Foundation, 2019 – Campinas (SP)
CHALLENGE
Develop a program to engage the school community in educating “beyond the school walls” in a collaborative and interdisciplinary way.
IMPACT
2 schools and 7 institutions focused on children were part of the action, totaling around 300 participants over the course of the whole project. The streets of the Amarais region were transformed into a big play area with the help of the community. In 6 months, the project:
_ conducted 9 workshops;
_ transformed 10 public spaces;
_ installed 10 pieces of equipment (outdoor furniture and playground);
_ built 1 vertical food garden;
_ built 1 music panel;
_ built 1 sensory panel;
_ painted 22 areas between walls and sidewalks;
_ held 12 community gatherings.
STRATEGY
Using the AU Methodology, a mapping of the “house – school” route was made by the kids. The beauties, talents and challenges of the routes inspired the proposal created in collaboration with the community. The programming was divided in 2 phases: EDUCATE (a week of educational and practical activities called “Local Knowledge Festival”) and TRANSFORM (hands-on activities beautifying and connecting their daily routes).
REGÊNCIA: WINDS THAT TRANSFORM
Partnership: Canal OFF, 2019 – Regência (ES)

Promoting environmental consciousness and public spaces revitalization activities, using sport as the main mobilization tool in remote areas of Brazil and resulting in a 1 hour documentary for the television channel OFF.
IMPACT
There were around _150 people directly involved and impacted in the community, aside from the people that have access to the documentary that was produced. During two weeks, we:
_ mobilized 5 local organizations;
_ installed 6 benches and 1 table;
_ cleaned and transformed 1 informal trash disposal place into a gathering space;
_ renovated 1 lookout platform;
_ installed 35 signs around the Village and the beach of Regência;
_ collected 2.000 litres of garbage;
_ held 1 big of environmental education action;
_ held 1 big collaborative economy event;
_ held 1 women’s circle focused on surfers and their empowerment.
STRATEGY
Using the AU Methodology, the diagnosis that gave a foundation to our proposal of action was made by the local partners. The programming was co-created in partnership with the local organizations, combining educational activities with proper construction of a legacy for the community.
CUMBUCO: WINDS THAT TRANSFORM
Partnership: Canal OFF, 2018 – Cumbuco (CE)
CHALLENGE
Promoting environmental consciousness and public spaces revitalization activities, using sport as the main mobilization tool in remote areas of Brazil and resulting in a 1 hour documentary for the television channel OFF.
IMPACT
There were around 200 people directly involved and impacted in the community, aside from the people that have access to the documentary that was produced. During one month, we:

_ renovated and furnished 1 shipping container for cultural and tourist activities;
_ built 1 stand up paddle board with plastic bottles;
_ installed 12 signs;

ESTRATÉGIA
Using the AU Methodology, the diagnosis provided the foundation for our proposal for the Workshops Festival. The programming was co-created in partnership with the local organizations, and divided in 2 phases: EDUCATE (a week of educational and practical activities led by local people) and TRANSFORM (hands-on activities honoring the local culture when building a legacy for the community).
I TAKE CARE OF MY DESTINATION
Partnership: Latam Airlines, 2017 – Raposa (MA)

IMPACTO
230 students and 15 teachers from 4 public schools were involved directly. 4 free events were organized with around 150 participants, including volunteers from Latam Airlines. This 6 month-long process achieved:
_ the realization of 50 educational and hands-on workshops;
_ the presence of 9 local facilitators and practitioners;
_ the building of 30 trash bins made of recycled water gallons for the schools and for the town shore;
_ the planting of 80 red mangrove seedlings;
_ the collecting of more than 5.000 litres of garbage from the streets and mangroves;
the painting of 220 meters of wall, including 2 houses on the most iconic street of the village and a map of 12 squared, painted with touristic and cultural information.
_ the creation of 18 signs with the tourist attractions of the Village.
STRATEGY
Using the AU Methodology, the diagnosis provided a foundation for our proposal for Raposa’s Treasure Hunt. The programming was co-created in partnership with the local organizations, and divided in two phases: EDUCATE (a week of educational and practical activities led by local people) and TRANSFORM (hands-on activities honoring the local culture when building a legacy for the community).
TOILETS CHANGE LIVES
CHALLENGE
Engaging one of the lower GDP communities in Brazil (Milagres – MA) in a project about sanitation, hygiene and health. Seeking effective impact and solutions through a playful, affectionate, community based, hands-on strategy.
IMPACT
Impacting 200 people directly and more than 1000 thousand people indirectly, this process resulted in:
_ the building of 15 toilets (100% of the village included);
_ 35 workshops offered by the team and the local people bringing educational, creative and traditional knowledge activities;
_ 1 celebration event with local products and a live show with the presence of all different generations.
STRATEGY
There were two main goals: while a group of youth created a sustainable solution for toilets to be built in Patos Village, the others would develop the Miracle Festival, where educational themes were learned and taught by children, youth and teachers.
